Paras Khadka- Goodwill Ambassador of National Volunteer

Kathmandu: In a program held at the office of National Reconstruction Authority (NRA) at Singhadurbar, Nepal’s National Cricket Team Captain Paras Khadka is appointed as the Goodwill Ambassador of National Volunteer Nepal (NVN)- the official volunteering network of Nepal set up jointly by the Government of Nepal and Himalayan Climate Initiative in the wake of the recent disastrous earthquake. As the Goodwill Ambassador, the outstanding and highly popular cricketer Khadka will help NVN in its goal to inspire and enroll a pool of 1,00,000 Volunteers from all over Nepal, and keep some 20,000 of them ready, anytime, to support in relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts during and after any disaster.

NVN, using offline and online tools, facilitates Nepali citizens, particularly the youth, to enroll in the volunteering network, provides them orientation, and deploys them, as needed, in Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction efforts during and after disasters. During other times, the Volunteers, so enrolled, would remain available to help the government, its development partners, and other philanthropic initiatives addressing social, environmental and economic contingencies.

Currently, more than 8,600 volunteers are already registered as National Volunteers. NVN has spread its network to 37 districts. This far, National Volunteers have provided high quality shelter to 2,784 people building 696 Resilient Homes, provided scholarships to more than 1,100 needy children in the earthquake affected areas, and helped more than 15 thousand people with relief and rehabilitation support at the time of need.

“I am honored to serve National Volunteer Nepal as its Goodwill Ambassador”, said Mr. Khadka. “This to me is an opportunity to make a real-life difference and positive impact on our society”.

On the occasion, National Reconstruction Authority CEO, Dr. Govinda Raj Pokharel said, “I urge every young Nepali with the intent to serve the society to join the reconstruction and rebuilding efforts, a great need of the country right now. I hope involvement of an iconic personality like Paras in such efforts will help spread this message far and wide and, and would inspire youth from every nook and corner of the country to join the efforts to serve the country”. “We look forward to working together with the National Volunteer Nepal and utilizing the skills and energy of young Nepalis in reconstruction efforts of NRA to build back better,” Pokharel added.

 “Besides volunteering work, bringing a cricketing personality like Paras Khadka on board would help bring an emotional unity among the youth of the country- currently highly radicalized”, said HCI Founder, Mr. Prashant Singh. He also elaborated on NVN’s motto of ‘Do Well. Do Good”.

During the same program, National Volunteers Mr. Dawa Steven Sherpa, Aditi Shrestha, Saurav J.B. Rana, Astha Thapa Pandey, Jacob Rinck, were felicitated for their leadership and contribution towards the efforts of providing earthquake resistant shelters to 696 earthquake victims through Resilient Homes.  

Mr. Anuj Agarwal, Director of Vishal Group was felicitated for his leadership and contribution towards support in starting Sadbhaw Scholarships program, and his contribution towards the efforts of providing scholarships to 1,100 needy children through Sadbhaw Scholarships.
